Scope

MEDSI school2 is a training course in mechanical design of synchrotron instruments. The MEDSI (Mechanical Engineering Design for Synchrotron Instruments) community comprises the mechanical groups from most of the world’s large X-ray facilities. This school is the second stage or advanced stage of the first level school (the early career engineering school) which took place in 2018 at DLS (Diamond Light Source) in the UK.

As an advanced level, this school’s primary objective is to deepen the knowledge of more experienced engineers and designers, who have already gained several years of experience.

The purpose of the lectures is first to clarify basic engineering concepts, drawing on experiences from previous MEDSI conferences, whilst also highlighting best practices and recent developments.

With synchrotron instrumentation trending towards high resolution, high accuracy and fast data acquisition, together with very stable devices, this school will develop on a large number of features, using clear statements, to enable attendees to acquire fundamentals in a variety of fields and complete their collection of skills required to serve X-ray science.

The school covers the following fields:

  • Electron and photon dynamics and storage ring physics
  • Thermal physics involving high heatload, and thermal stability
  • Beamline optic simulation using Oasys package
  •  X-ray optics
  • Opto-Mechanics for optics
  • Fluid physics of cooling
  • Material analysis keys for best operation
  • High precision design
  • Mechatronics

The fundamentals lectures will be given mainly in the mornings, while application cases and hands-on tutorials will be organised in the afternoons.
