This seminar consists of 4 parts: a brief presentation of my knowledge and skills, the work I did throughout my postgraduate studies, the link between my previous studies and my possible ESRF project and a list of what the benefits of my postdoctoral stay would be, for me and for the ID21 line.

I am a physicist with a master’s degree and a doctorate in materials science. I have experience in synchrotron measurements, especially in x-ray polycrystal diffraction, and in different characterizations of materials at the laboratory level. My most valuable capacities are: a) to understand in detail physico-mathematical ideas and methods, and b) to transform mentioned ideas into computer programs. My graduate studies led me to contribute a computer-aided methodology for the approximate prediction of axially-textured polycrystals’ properties using as input the 2D-XRD pattern and single-crystal properties’ tensors.

My PhD project in materials science represented a study cycle on the structure-properties relationship at the mesoscopic level. The main structural analysis techniques were x-ray and electron diffraction. The current purpose is to deepen this investigation, moving to the micro and nano scale. We intend to investigate the microstructure of functional materials and try to understand and predict the origin of the properties at atomic level. The best techniques for this new level of study are based on the different variants of absorption spectroscopy, at the micro- and nanometric levels.

The presented project is the study of damage in lead-free piezoelectrics caused by X-ray and gamma radiation. After a first base state characterization by μ-XANES, the whole samples will be irradiated under different regimes. Subsequently the μ-XANES Ti K-edge spectra measurement, will allow the evaluation of the degradation. The piezoelectric response of each sample will be measured before and after radiation exposure. The obtained spectroscopic results will be correlated with changes in piezoelectric responses.

Having a stronger training in absorption and fluorescence X-rays techniques would help me to complement an important part of my skills. I would be able to study in great detail samples with low crystallinity and/or local order. On the other hand, I could give a different approach to the group with respect to the materials physics and crystallography. And I could complement the development work of instrumentation and programming tools.
