TRACING NANOMATERIALS IN THE ENVIRONMENT
The ID21 Beamline has been a pioneer in the use of X-ray microspectrosopy to investigate the fate of nanoparticles in the environment. The research spans across the whole cycle of products (food, creams, etc), from its sources up to the plants, soils and microbial communities. Using the ID21 spectromicroscopes, ID21 and its collaborators are able to provide information on two fronts: (i) the submicron scale and the microspatial distribution of these nanoparticles and (ii) the transformations suffered by these nanoparticles (speciation) in the environment. It is important to asses their potential bioavailability and toxicology across multiple food-chains.
