physics world on C02 storage

last modified 18-12-2009 11:40

Climate change mitigation proposals include storing CO2 from the atmosphere underground, but efficient storage media do not (yet) exist. Gaseous hydrates of CO2 and water, converted to solid "ice", could solve the problem.

physics world reports on work by a group of scientists from the University of Dortmund who use the ESRF beamline ID15 to study gas hydrates under high pressure when they solidify. Their objective is understanding the conditions when this happens and whether they could be maintained in the solid state in environmental conditions of practical applications.
