CBS 60 Minutes visits the ESRF

last modified 27-05-2010 11:39

On 12 April 2010, the existence of a new hominid species was unveiled to the world at a press conference in Johannesburg. A few weeks earlier, CBS 60 Minutes had been given permission to film X-ray imagery of the fossil at the ESRF.

The fossilised remains of this male hominid who lived about 1.8 million years ago, had been discovered by Lee Berger from Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. In the TV programme, CBS correspondent Bob Simon sketches this discovery and its significance, and he interviews Berger on what ESRF Beamline ID19 will contribute to the study of this extraordinary find.
