Lightsources.org: First anniversary of a synchrotron alliance

24-02-2006

The synchrotron world is commemorating an anniversary. Lightsources.org, the website uniting 60 light sources around the world, has just celebrated its first year of life. It is a unique tool for scientists, journalists, and anybody who wants to obtain a thorough insight into what is going on in synchrotron radiation worldwide. This collaboration is sponsored by 21 of the world's leading lightsources and has been a great success. With the participation of facilities from four different continents, more than 600 news items and press releases have already been published.

In addition to news, the site presents topical information for lightsource users such as an events calendar which lists both international conferences and local meetings for each synchrotron facility. There is also a list of proposal deadlines to help Synchrotron Users organise their research schedules. Static information includes links to publications, industrial companies and educational material on the partner sites.

A future challenge facing the partners is how to make this website and its content multilingual so that non-English speaking visitors are able to read articles in their own languages when translations exist. Another aim for the partners is to increase the diversity and number of images in the site's Image Database to reflect the multitude of scientific areas covered by the facilities and their Users.
