Beauty of science: crystal diffraction quality

The image is a diffraction quality map of a crystal of bovine mitochondrial F1-ATPase as probed by a microfocused X-ray beam.

The map is coloured by crystal diffraction quality (blue to mauve), contour lines mark homogenous areas. The technique uses the capabilities of modern pixel array detectors to sample thousands of positions within a crystal, defining both the shape and optimal diffraction volumes in minutes.
