Aim of the Workshop

Almost 30 years have elapsed since the design and evaluation of the first energy dispersive X-ray absorption spectrometer to measure EXAFS rapidly using synchrotron radiation. Since then, applications of this method have greatly evolved, and technical solutions were found to adapt these spectrometers to even more challenging experiments.  From the initial time-resolved studies to track rapid changes in the local and electronic structure of absorber atoms in disordered systems, to the investigation of matter at extreme conditions of pressure and temperature, emerging applications are now appearing such as studies at extreme pulsed magnetic fields and XAS mapping of heterogeneous samples with micron resolution.  In view of the construction of new beamlines and synchrotron sources, and of the upcoming XFEL projects, the time is right to evaluate and assess the scientific impact of EDXAS. The aim of the workshop is to bring experts together in an informal setting to discuss both the unique scientific opportunities offered by EDXAS as well as the present and future technical challenges to overcome.

The scientific programme is organized around six plenary sessions with invited talks, and a poster session. The following subjects will be covered:

  • Reaction kinetics in chemistry and catalysis
  • Operando experiments: “in-situ” and combining/synchronizing different techniques
  • Solid state physics at extreme conditions of P, T and H
  • X-ray polarization dependent studies
  • Hyperspectral mapping
  • Facilities around the world and new facilities
  • Challenges in detectors, optics, stability and sample environment
