Crystal Analyser laboratory

The Crystal Analyser Laboratory (CAL) at the ESRF is dedicated to the fabrication of spherical (cylindrical) analyser crystals mainly employed in spectroscopic or inelastic X-ray scattering studies. The CAL covers an area of roughly 120 m2 including a “clean room” of 60 m2. There is a small chemical room for etching and cleaning operations.

The laboratory represents a significant ESRF investment in response to the increasing internal demand for analyser crystals for multi-analyser spectrometers.

The CAL currently produces mainly spherically bent, bent-diced and diced Si analyser crystals.

The laboratory was inaugurated in 2015 and more than 90 analysers were produced in the first year of activity.

The CAL can produce analyser crystals for external laboratories on demand.
