DOI - CONCEPTS

The following concepts are part of the implementation of the DOI system at the ESRF:

  • Data Policy - The  ESRF data policy requires ESRF users to cite the DOIs for data taken at the ESRF.
  • Digital Object Identifier system (http://doi.org)  - a system which enables digital identifiers to be defined for any kind of object or thing. Introduced in 2000 to identify and refer to publications it has since been adopted for referring to scientific data too. It allows data to be traced from production to publication.  
  • DOI name - a persistent identifier automatically generated to identify all the data from a session at the ESRF  e.g. doi:10.15151/ESRF-ES-90632739.
  • FAIR data - data which implement the FAIR principles i.e. data which are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.
  • Landing page - a web page associated with each DOI name containing the high level metadata (title, authors, date etc.) guaranteed to be persistent e.g. https://doi.esrf.fr/10.15151/ESRF-ES-90632739.
  • Open Data - data can be made open access on request before the official end of the embargo period. Users are encouraged to make  data open as soon as they publish them or if for some reason they do not plan to publish them. To open data the Principle Investigator must send an email to datapolicy@esrf.fr specifying his or her request and the name of the session and the date.
  • Proposal - Currently only data from external public proposals and in-house research proposals are archived and therefore have a DOI name.
  • Raw data - the data referred to by the DOI  are archived for 10 years (at least) as required by the ESRF data policy. They can be downloaded by the research team members during the embargo period and by anyone after that during the 10 years.
  • Session - a contiguous period in time of taking data as part of an ESRF proposal.
  • Traceability - by citing DOIs in all publications, users guarantee the traceability of all the details of their experiment. This includes the title, the authors and the raw data.
