One of the major general strengths of powder diffraction is the ability to carry out measurements under a wide range of conditions. Ancillary equipment available for experiments is as follows:

  • Liquid-helium-cooled cryostat; spinning capillary specimens routinely to 4 K, and below.
  • Oxford Cryosystems Cryostream cold-nitrogen-gas blower. Capillary specimens in the range 80 - 500 K.
  • Hot-air blower (commercialized by Cyberstar, France). Capillary specimens to 950°C.
  • Halogen-bulb Mirror Furnace. Sample contained in Pt capillary heated to ~1500°C. Auxilliary laser heating under development.
  • Laser (50 mW, 532 nm wavelength) for electronic excitation.
  • Gas-handling capillary cell, pressures to 100 bar [1] for non-corrosive gasses. Two cylinders can be connected to the gas-rig, for alternating or successive use of different gases.
  • Corrosive-gas handling cell to around 10 bar.
  • Compact, 5 kN stress rig (belongs to ID11).
  • Translation stages etc. for mapping residual strain in engineering components.
  • ID22 is equiped with an automatic sample changer, which can change up to 75 samples (in capillaries) on the axis of the diffractometer. Click here to see the robot in action.
  • Other equipments from the ESRF Sample Environment Pool upon special request.
