XRF analysis has been used to spot Cu in mussels

Confocal microfocussed XRF imaging on BM26A analyses copper in mussels

Stephen Bauters, a thesis student at the University of Ghent, has been busy this week. With David Deruytter, a colleague from the Laboratory of Environmental Toxicology and Aquatic Ecology, University of Ghent, he has been exploring the influence and toxicity of Cu in mussels. He set up a new confocal micro-focused XRF imaging arrangement to irradiate micron sized areas of mussel gills. The aim is to localise Cu accumulations in the animal and then to use confocal XANES to examine the speciation of the Cu in selected hotspots.
