Life in Grenoble

In 2014, Grenoble received the “FrenchTech” label from the French government, officialising its innovative, scientific and technological character. The city boasts a large number of innovative companies, especially in the area of microelectronics and software, many research laboratories, including international organisations, one of the major French universities (Université Grenoble Alpes) and many higher education institutes (Grenoble INP, Grenoble Ecole de Management, etc).

These organisations boost the dynamism of the city and contribute to its international character and open-minded spirit.

Grenoble and the surrounding area also have a rich historical heritage and lead an ambitious cultural policy. The metropolitan area has several museums, theatres, concert halls and other artistic venues and hosts several festivals every year. Several cinemas show films in their original languages and offer a large number of films in English especially.

Nature & Sports

With its exceptional position at the crossroads of three mountain valleys, Grenoble is the perfect place for nature lovers and outdoor activities. Hiking, climbing and skiing are just a few of the activities popular among locals. Many sports infrastructures are available in town and almost every sport can be practised. Our employees have access to a wide range of sports activities through the sports club of the nearby CEA institute. They can also participate in the inter-institute competitions that are organised regularly.

International Schooling

There are 3 primary schools with international sections in Grenoble (Ecole de la Houille Blanche, Ecole Jean Jaurès, Ecole Bizanet) and two international secondary schools.

The Cité Scolaire Internationale is a French public secondary school that teaches the official French curriculum and offers additional language and history curricula available in German, English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. It is located near the Presqu’île scientifique.

A private secondary school called American School of Grenoble offers a course inspired by the US education system and designed to meet the needs of English-speaking pupils from 10 to 18 years old who wish to receive an American education, such as American children who will return to the US once their parents' contract in Grenoble is finished. The American School of Grenoble is located in the same buildings as the Cité Scolaire Internationale.

Childcare

Several possibilities exist for childcare in France, depending on whether you need full-time, part-time, afterschool or babysitting solutions. The cost of childcare provided by state-registered professionals is calculated depending on parents’ income.

Assistante maternelle (independent child-minder)

A network of state-registered childcare providers. They welcome children either at their homes, within a structure of assistante maternelles, or at your home. A contract binds the assistante maternelle and the parents and is usually limited to 9h per day.

Crèche

A regular day-care centre which caters for infants between the ages of 2 months and 3 years.

Halte garderie

An occasional solution for children under the age of 6, for several hours or for several half-days per week.

Jardin d'enfants

A day-care centre for children between the ages of 2-6. It is designed for children not yet attending school and for those attending part-time.

Local town halls can provide information on childcare services available.
