From 1 to 3 August 2002, the ESRF and the ILL held jointly a workshop on "Crystal Chemistry of New Materials and Soft Matter studied by Synchrotron and Neutron Diffraction".

Neutron and Synchrotron diffraction have been essential for the understanding of new materials - hard magnets, superconductors, colossal magneto-resistance (CMR) materials, zeolites, etc. Large position-sensitive detectors, image plates, focusing optics, polarized beams and new software, are all being developed rapidly, and opening new opportunities for chemists, physicists and biologists interested in relating the properties of materials to their structure.

Hearty discussions during a break in the proceedings.

This workshop highlighted many of the latest developments in these fields and 30 invited talks by leading scientists in neutron and synchrotron research were delivered. A total of 87 participants registered for the meeting, and, in addition to most European countries, Australia, India, Japan and the United States were represented.

The workshop was a satellite meeting to the XIX congress of the International Union of Crystallograpy conference held in Geneva on 6-15 August 2002.
