The annual event dedicated to the ESRF user community:
learn about, discuss and experience the science and cutting-edge research made with ESRF synchrotron light

PROGRAMME

2018 has again been an intense and productive year for the ESRF, as well as being the year in which the ESRF will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The beamlines have been running at full capacity and user interest was again at an all-time high, with 2544 proposals received for beam time in 2018. Activity in the first half of 2018 showed record figures across the board, as ESRF staff and users alike try to maximise ESRF use before the imminent shutdown on 10th December for the ESRF-EBS upgrade project. The construction of the first of a new generation of low emittance, high energy synchrotrons, which will boost the brilliance and coherence of the X-rays, is a strategic project for the future of the ESRF and its user community.

The four keynote speakers of the plenary session will give a flavour of the cutting-edge research which can be carried out with the help of the ESRF and the EBS upgrade. The Directors’ facility report will present recent science from new and/or upgraded beamlines while the poster clips will give a flavour of the broad scope of user science which will be on display during the evening poster session and cocktail. The presentation of the ESRF Young Scientist Award 2019 and the talk by the winner will, along with a news update on the EBS project, complete the plenary session of the User Meeting 2019. Three User-Dedicated Microsymposia and nine user tutorials will complete the User Meeting activities, giving users the opportunity to present their research and to discuss and exchange with other users, colleagues and staff.

The ESRF User Meeting is an ideal forum for exchange among users and with the  ESRF staff, whether it be to discuss the EBS project and its opportunities or to stimulate new proposals and ideas. The ESRF user community is warmly invited to participate through the submission of abstracts and posters and by meeting together onsite for discussion, interaction and networking.

EVENTS HIGHLIGHTS

Monday 4 February 2019

   TUTORIALS

This year nine tutorials on a range of different scientific topics will be organised and offered to users on the first day of the event, including a round-table discussion on "Gender parity in science" which will take place over lunch (buffet provided) to allow a maximum number of users wishing to participate in another tutorial to attend, and a meeting on strategies for improving biological sample preservation which complements the microsymposium on X-ray microscopy in biology. The tutorials last from several hours up to 1 day, and in many cases the number of participants is limited; those interested are therefore invited to register as soon as possible after registration opens. Each tutorial will be animated by experts and we encourage you to take this opportunity to work closely with these experts and with users of similar interests and requirements.

In the first instance, these tutorials are not open to ESRF staff since priority for attending is given to external participants. However, ESRF staff interested in attending shoud contact the User Office who will maintain a waiting list and will add any interested ESRF staff members to the participant list once registration is closed, if spaces are available.
