Quasicrystals are long range ordered materials which lack lattice periodicity: their diffraction pattern presents sharp Bragg peaks but with symmetries, such as five-fold rotation axes, incompatible with lattice translation. They belong to the larger class of aperiodic crystals that encompass incommensurately modulated phases, incommensurate composites and quasicrystals, which led to a paradigm shift and have deeply modified our understanding of long range ordered materials. After an introduction to the field of aperiodic crystals, I will illustrate the recent progress achieved in the understanding of the atomic structure and dynamics of icosahedral quasicrystals, using neutron and x-ray large-scale facilities. Some open questions and experimental challenges will then be addressed.
