Nano-diffraction and coherent diffraction imaging at ID01
At ID01 operando nano-diffraction and coherent diffraction imaging allow one to delve inside crystalline materials and image defect structures potentially with a few picometre sensitivity. Often such defects modify the material’s properties which can either hinder or aid their eventual application and enable function to be engineered.
Ferroelectrics are a prime candidate. When grown in thin film form the presence of domains and their boundaries, domain walls (DWs), were originally considered detrimental to their integration into devices. However, it has been shown that DWs can offer new pathways to novel nanoelectronic devices, such as an enhanced response to an external field, or stress, or conducting DWs in an insulating film.
A short overview of the groundwork laid at ID01 to date will be decorated with several examples including the orientation of domain walls in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices and recent results on the in-situ poling of PbTiO3 thin films (100nm) on KTaO3 substrates.
The ID16B beamline in light of the ESRF - Extremely Brilliant Source will also be discussed.
