While the automation of the ESRF’s MX beam-lines has undoubtedly been beneficial to the majority of users of the beam-lines, inexperienced users are often not aware of what such automation protocols are really doing and assume that ‘good data’ will be obtained regardless of sample quality, experimental set-up etc. Moreover, many of the hardware and software features now available – particularly those recently added -  are not used to their full potential as inexperienced users do not know how to interpret output properly or even why such options are available on the beam-lines

The ‘Getting the most from the ESRF MX beam-lines’ school is therefore aimed at younger scientists and designed to (a) introduce the art of collecting good diffraction data at synchrotron-based MX facilities, (b) familiarise the participants with the tools available at the beam-line to allow pre- and post-data collection decisions to be taken and (c) present the various ancillary techniques and equipment accessible at the ESRF’s MX beam-lines.

The School will last for 4 days - straddling the ESRF Users’ Meeting  - and consist of 2 days of lectures and 1 day of demonstrations and practical training on the beam-lines themselves. The number of particpants will be limited to 20, with all local costs (i.e. registration fees, accomodation, subsistence) met by the ESRF.
