Soft X-ray edge studies using inelastic scattering of hard X-rays:
The first-principles package FEFF8(q)
Two tutorial-level lectures edited by J.A. Soininen,
ESRF Experiments Division
Tuesday 13th May and Friday 16th May
from 10am to noon
in room 4 at MTBF
First-principles modeling plays an important role in modern spectroscopy as an aid in the interpretation of experimental results. In the field of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) the FEFF-package is widely used to model and analyze data. We will introduce a recent extension of the capabilities of FEFF to modeling of non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering from core-electrons, i.e. X-ray Raman scattering (XRS). The course includes a theoretical part with an introduction to the similarities and differences between XAS and XRS. We will also describe the current status of theoretical approximations used in the FEFF8(q) code. The hands-on part of the course will involve simple examples on the application of the code in the analysis of recent XRS experiments. This will consist of modeling the momentum transfer dependence of XRS spectra and analyzing how it relates to the underlying electronic structure of the system. Finally we will describe how the code can be used to aid in designing experiments. The computational work will be done in the local Unix environment (Coral cluster) and available visualization programs (e.g. Matlab or Gnuplot) will be applied in the analysis of the calculated results.
