The aim of the Workshop is to assess the present possibilities of absorption spectroscopy at the ESRF and at other 3rd generation sources in a few selected areas of research and to attempt to define directions for future developments. Emphasis is given to time-resolved studies, investigation of matter in extreme conditions of temperature and pressure and at high energies and microprobe techniques.
