25 journalists from 12 European countries will come to Grenoble from 24 to 26 November.

This study trip is organised by EUSJA (European Union of Science Journalists’ Associations), ESRF and AEPI (Agency for the Promotion of Isère) and sponsored mainly by the Conseil Général.

The journalists will be welcomed on Wednesday 24 November at the ESRF, where they will attend the following introductory talks: “European science in Grenoble”, by Christian Vettier (Director of ILL Science Division), “Scientific centres of excellence in Isère”, by Jean-Paul Giraud (President of AEPI) and “Research at Grenoble University”, by Yannick Vallée (President of Grenoble University). They will learn for example that Grenoble is first in France and fifth in Europe for participation by its laboratories in the EU Research and Development Framework Programme.

This will be the start of a wide discovery of Grenoble’s labs, from magnetism and ecology to computing, microelectronics and nanoscience. The European and international dimension of the science carried out in Grenoble will be particularly emphasized.

The journalists will also be invited to celebrate the centenary of Louis Néel’s birthday and attend a talk on Louis Néel’s life by Hubert Curien, previous Minister of Research.

On Friday 26 November, the journalists will come again to the ESRF. After a general introduction by Bill Stirling, they will have the opportunity to discover various beamlines and discuss with scientists. In the afternoon, a presentation of the Partnership for Structural Biology by Stephen Cusack (Director of EMBL-Grenoble and Chairman of the PSB Steering Committee), a “PSB lunch”, and a visit to the labs of ILL, EMBL and IBS will put an end to this very busy study trip.
