The development of new and improved X-ray detector systems is one the instrumentation areas with major potential impact for the enhancement of the scientific capabilities of the ESRF beamlines. The talk will illustrate the current in-house detector development capabilities and the ongoing collaborations in the field as an introduction to the description of the ESRF detector programme. The programme itself is the result of a detailed preparation work that was carried out during the ESRFUP project and is articulated in three main branches: application specific developments for UBPBLs, development of key detector technologies and proposals for new advanced detector systems.

This lecture is directly derived from a talk presented to the ESRF Scientific Advisory Committee in November 2011.
