imgCIF / CBF VERSION 1 DATA COMPRESSION
imgCIF / CBF VERSION 1 includes support for two types of
loss-less data compression.
Why only loss-less ?
- Loss-less is the place to start. (Lossy may follow.)
- Community acceptance is much easier.
- No worries about what is being lost
- Lossy compression is application specific, different types of
data may require different "acceptable loss" criteria, and different
algorithms.
- Exact reconstruction may be very important. e.g. Detector noise
verification.
imgCIF / CBF Version 1 compression algorithms:
- None: Store raw binary values
- "Byte Offsets": Only store pixel to pixel differences in a single
byte whenever possible. Simple and fast, but limited to a maximum
compression ratio of 2 (compared to 16 bit pixel values).
- "Predictor Huffman": Choice of predictor algorithms followed by
modified Huffman entropy encoding.
