ESRF-EBS selected as landmark for ESFRI 2016 roadmap

10-03-2016

The ESRF-EBS project has been highlighted as an ESFRI landmark in the 2016 ESFRI roadmap. On 10th March 2016, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) presented the 2016 ESFRI Roadmap on Research Infrastructures, at the launch event in Amsterdam. The Roadmap consists of six new projects, 15 previously selected projects and 29 "landmarks", identified for scientific excellence, pan-European relevance, socio-economic impact and innovation. During this launch event, the ESRF-EBS project was highlighted, along with the CERN HL-LHC, as a major landmark project.

As explained by Francesco SETTE, Director General of the ESRF, "I'm very pleased that the ESRF-EBS, a revolutionary project, is part of the ESFRI roadmap. Following the completion of the ESRF Upgrade Programme Phase I, project present on the ESFRI roadmap since 2006 and delivered on time and within budget in 2015, the inclusion of the ESRF-EBS project as a landmark on the 2016 ESFRI roadmap marks and underlines the pioneering role and the key contribution of the ESRF to the excellence of science and innovation in Europe. With the support of its 21 partner countries and of Europe, the ESRF has designed and launched the construction of the ESRF-EBS, opening the way to a new generation of synchrotrons. The ESRF-EBS, delivering a conceptually new and first-of-a-kind storage ring, will provide scientists with unprecedented X-ray tools to better understand the infinite ways atoms combine, and give origin to the Universe in which we exist and make life possible! As long as Europe will need state-of-the-art synchrotron X-rays, the ESRF will be there showing the way."

The ESRF-EBS project represents an investment of 150 M€ over the period 2015-2022. The principal aim of this project is to construct and commission the new 844 m circumference ESRF-EBS storage ring. About 90% of the existing infrastructure will be re-used, and the new ESRF-EBS design has been conceived with greatly improved energy efficiency, reducing electricity costs by 20%. With performances multiplied by 100 in terms of brilliance and coherence, this new source of synchrotron radiation will offer unprecedented tools for the exploration of matter and for the understanding of life at the macromolecular level. It will thus contribute to answering the pressing technological, economic, health and environment challenges facing our society.

The ESRF-EBS project also includes the construction of new state-of-the-art beamlines, an ambitious scientific instrumentation programme including high-performance detectors and a "data as a service" strategy.

The implementation of this major project is based on the unique expertise of the ESRF, on the success of the ESRF Upgrade Programme Phase I that has provided new tools to explore the nano-world, but also on the synergy with European laboratories and synchrotrons to develop Open Innovation, and to enhance the competitiveness of European industry through Open Science.
