Towards Clinical Radiation Therapy at the Australian Synchrotron: Developments and Future Directions
Synchrotron radiotherapy modalities under pre-clinical development at the Australian Synchrotron include microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) and ultra-high dose-rate radiation therapy (Flash-RT). These modalities utilise radiation fields that have physical properties that are distinctly different from conventional radiotherapy (CRT). The radiobiological consequences of these distinct physical properties could be the paradigm shift required to radically improve outcomes for patients where CRT provides minimal benefit. The current challenge is to safely translate these promising findings to a clinical reality. This presentation will discuss some of the key issues that are currently being investigated in the quest to perform a clinical trial of synchrotron radiation therapy at the Australian Synchrotron. These issues include determining dose-equivalence with conventional radiation therapy, systematically characterising normal tissue toxicity and determining optimal treatment sites for MRT.
