In April, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) consortium has released the first image of the close environment of a black hole, the supermassive (6.5 10⁹ solar masses) black hole in the center of the M87 galaxy. This image has an angular resolution of 20 μas and reveals the shadow of the BH event horizon shown against the distorted image of the surrounding accretion disk. It has been obtained by combining the observations of 7 radiotelescopes around the globe, operating at a frequency of 230 GHz, using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) aperture synthesis. IRAM (Institut de Radio-Astronomie Millimétrique) in Grenoble is a major contributor to the EHT consortium, its two observatories being the 2nd and 3rd most sensitive stations of the network.
This talk will present the EHT goals and observational techniques, the main results derived from the analysis of the M87 image, and the next steps and future observations of the project.
