Restarting BLISS device servers
In a UNIX terminal window, connect to the machine lid292 [for Linux ID292]:
- telnet lid292
- login: blissadm
- password: (Ask your LC, BLOM or Beamline Scientist)
- bliss_dserver status
- bliss_dserver stop xxx (which ever device server: Wagods, McaRontec, MaxeVpapds, Vct6Card,etc..)
- bliss_dserver start xxx
- exit
- EXP>reconfig
- OH>reconfig
- EXP> phi_init()
- EXP> resetup
Do I have beam?
The following action can be taken to verify that there is beam in the hutch (starting with the most obvious)- Check the Front End application to see if the Front End is open.
- Check that the undulator gap setting corresponds to the monochromator energy.
- In the application ControlPanel insert the mono beam viewer (that can be seen under the tab filters. Check on the video server application for the opticals hutch if there is beam. If there is no beam contact your LC!
- Check if the attenuators are all out in the experimental hutch and make sure that the collimator is not catching the beam.
I
do not have any beam or much beam - what do I do?
Here is a checklist -
- Is there beam in the storage ring?
- Is the FRONT END OPEN?
- Is the monochromator energy correct for the undulator gap setting you are using?
- Is the secondary slit vertical gap and offset (motors ssvg & ssvo) misset or open wide enough?
- Are the attenuators out of the beam (EXP> mattset 0; OH> attf, attm and attb at 0)?
- Is the safety shutter open?
- Is the fast piezo shutter working (check lights on front panel of module next to the set of attenuators)
- Is the experimental table height (motor thgt) correct?
- Has there been a loss of vacuum anywhere along the beamline? (Especially important at longer wavelengths.)
I've done all that - what is the next step?
There are some more subtle things that could be losing intensity. If these fail,
call your LC.
The energy scan of the X-ray fluorescence is flat, i.e. No absorption edge!
Just how sure are you that there really is selenium or mercury or whatever heavy atom in your crystals? After you have checked the following -
1)
that the Rontec detector is in
2) that the shutters are open
3) that X-ray energy is above the absorption edge
4) that the Rontec detector is properly aligned with the sample, etc...
-
check to see if there is any X-ray fluorescence by e.g. collection an XFEspectrum. Are there any peaks in the emmission
spectra? If "yes", can you identify the emission lines.
Restart the the phi device server (bliss_dserver/galil)
To restart the the phi device server, please refer to Restarting BLISS device servers.
Problems with the device server connections to the ADSC detector PCs might look like this:
-
01:18:52 PM:
01:18:52 PMError in spec: Can't import "id29/adsc/1".
Device has not been fully imported yet, (hint: start the device server) (8).
Restart the ADSC device servers
Click on the icon Restart Detector Software wich is on the right display of p1-id29. IMPORTANT: wait at least 30 sec to give sufficient time for the restart.
Front End or Storage Ring Network device server
The connection to the storage ring device server may be lost during movements of the undulators (e.g. during an zap-scan) or opening of the Front End.
01:26:02 PMError in spec: Can't import "//aries/id/id/29".
-
RPC client call timed out (2).
Restarting the VME crate id291
There are many VME device servers on the crate id291: Vacuum, VCT6, galil(mono), Maxe etc... these are related to the optics hutch and linked to the SPEC sessions OPTICS, EXP.
To restart ALL VME device servers on a crate (id291):
- Reboot the VME crate id291,
- the VME crate id291 is in the electronic rack #01
(right most of the crates in the graphics room), - locate the abort and reset buttons which are at chest height in the second left most electronic card marked MVME 162-522,
- push abort and then reset,
- then wait 15 minutes!
- Restart the device servers in EXP, OPTICS by typing:
-
EXP> reconfig
OPTICS> reconfig - Check the outputs, there should NOT be any error messages: "...device server does not import..."
- If there are,
- Wait 5 minutes and then try reconfig again.
- Otherwise, restart the faulty VME device server manually.
- the VME crate id291 is in the electronic rack #01
Manual restart VME device servers
To restart the a VME device server MANUALLY:
- telnet id291
- root rt
- procs
[look for "process number" of the device server that does not import..., e.g VCT6, galil, etc...] - os9kill -2 ${process_number}
[where ${process_number} = the "process number" of the device server...] - dir [list the startup macros]
- more ${device_server}.startup [lists the macro of 2-3 lines]
- "Vct6" for counters
- "galil" for phi/mono axis
- "Maxe0","Maxe1","Maxe2" & "Maxe3" for motors
- copy and paste the macro, and then type enter!
- exit
- procs
- reconfig in EXP, OPTICS or SPECSERV.
I need some more liquid Nitrogen.
Take the big 120 L Dewar and refill it at the filling point near BM29 (towards the central building or anticlockwise round the storage ring from ID29). The Dewar should be connected via the flexible transfer path, and the entry and exit valves both open before attempting to fill. Refilling instructions for the liquid Nitrogen supply.
What is the code to the main door?
A2014
What is the account & password for the computers on ID29?
For all of the computers -
user account: opid29 password: tonic29
What is the password on my account on NICE?
user account: ls1234 [the ESRF project number to your experiment, e.g. LS-1234]
password: abls1234 [the first two letters of the family name of the principal proposer, e.g. ABERNATHY, followed by the project number]
How do I display ADSC images on the monitor p1-id29?
In a UNIX shell
type:
adxv image_name_1_001.img
How do I determine correct undulator gap settings?
Check out the tables in Undulator settings.
