Synopsis

ID21, ID22 and ID18F are three fully dedicated beamlines to microscopy and microspectroscopy techniques in the multi-keV range period. In particular, ID22 is a multitechnique hard x-ray microprobe focused on x-ray fluorescence, absorption and diffraction on the micrometer scale. The beamline is located at a high-beta section of the storage ring, and combines a two-undulators source with an achromatic focusing optics. As a result, the configuration provides a focused monochromatic beam of about 3.5 times 1.5 µm2 with a flux up to 1012 ph/s between 6.5 and 18 keV.

The flexible design of the microprobe allows to bring together different techniques fulfilling high demanding experiments. Few examples include anvil cells, owens,  He chamber, cryostreams or other in-situ approaches routinely carried out. Its versatile instrumentation plays a key role:  13-elements solid-state detector, Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror, Compound Refractive Lenses, piezo nanopositioner, high-precision CCDs, etc.

Scientific applications

After several years refining analytical methods, hard x-ray lenses, hardware, data acquisition and processing, ID22 now offers a variety of different approaches like fluorescence-tomography, XANES imaging, holography and phase-contrast micro-tomography with micrometer resolution. The ID22 simultaneous potentialities for trace elements detection and mapping, quantitative fluorescence analysis, chemical state specificity and structural probe, make it ideal for a wide range of disciplines: biology, medicine, environmental and earth sciences, art and archaeology as well as material sciences.
