Cryo stage

last modified 18-02-2011 17:01

The SXM is equipped with a cryo-stage and special sample holders maintaining the sample at low temperature during data acquisition.

Principle

A LN2 reservoir is filled from outside the vessel. Its OFHC copper base situated inside the SXM vacuum at 77K is connected to a “floating” copper exchanger by flexible braids. This exchanger is held in thermal contact with the sample holder by samarium cobalt magnets (0.2mm clearance). The sample is insulated by a Polyetheretherketone (Peek) spacer ring (k = 0.25 W m-1 K-1). A 4 micron Ultralene window limits sublimation of the sample during pump down.
