Safety Training                     How to search & interlock the hutches

Safety training

All users must follow the ESRF safety training course before beginning any work on the beamline.

The safety training session can be found on the ESRF Intranet: on the top of the home page, position your mouse on "Intranet" and click on "Users Safety Training" in the drop-down list.

Search & Interlock the Hutches

Before opening the shutters, you should check that the optical and experimental hutches are searched and interlocked. The procedure for doing this is given in the safety training.

However, if you have forgotten, here is a brief reminder for the experimental hutch:

  • Press the green start search button on the PSS panel (outside hutch - right of the door).
  • Ensure no-one is in the hutch then press the two search buttons inside the hutch in the following order: the first search button is located on the right as you enter the hutch, the second on the left. (both lights should go green; if only one light comes on you can continue but you should inform the local contact).
  • Close the hutch door firmly.
  • Press the yellow final search button on the PSS panel (shown below left).

Left: PSS panel (outside the experimental hutch) - Middle: First search button (right as you enter the hutch) - Right: Second search button (left as you enter the hutch)

Opening the hutch: To enter the hutch, first make sure that the data collection has finished or been stopped by MxCuBe and that the safety shutter is closed (this should be done automatically by MxCube but you can check it visually by looking at the status of the shutter which is displayed in MxCube -as shown below). Then press the black open hutch button on the PSS panel for a few seconds (see left image above). The interlock light will go out on the PSS panel.

Normally the optical hutch will not need to be searched, but on certain occasions this may need to be done. In this hutch there are also two search buttons. Just follow the same procedure outlined above.
