The ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, www.esrf.eu) is a joint facility supported and shared by 18 European countries where Spain is included. Furthermore, the member countries can form groups, located at the ESRF site, to exploit some of the ESRF beamlines (the Bending Magnets). These groups, which design, construct and operate their own beamlines are called Collaborating Research Groups (CRG).

BM16 (http://www.esrf.eu/UsersAndScience/Experiments/CRG/BM16/) is a Spanish CRG funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología and DURSI, and managed by the Laboratori de Llum Sincrotró (LLS, www.lls.cells.es). BM16 is a Beamline optimized for the accomplishment of experiments in protein crystallography (PX) and diffraction of small and wide angles (SAXS and WAXS). The LLS consortium initiated the project of the new synchrotron facility, ALBA (http://www.cells.es/), being built near Barcelona.
