Accessing Computing Resources from outside ESRF

last modified 10-11-2009 17:08

The page below describes the various remote access methods to the ESRF computing resources.

All ESRF staff, CRG staff, or visitors/cybervisitors with valid ESRF accounts can use these methods.

Accessing your Windows PC from outside (Remote Desktop)

Please note that you require a PC at home Running Windows XP or Windows Vista with Internet Explorer
(Mac OS X, Windows Vista 64bit or Linux are not supported).
In case of difficulty, you are kindly invited to test the procedure below from an ESRF PC outside the firewall.  PCs running Windows XP are available in Central Building room 088 and near the Auditorium, and the laptops from the Multimedia loan pool are running Windows Vista. This will enable you to validate the connection to your ESRF PC from outside.

Step-by-Step way to access your Windows PC from outside

What can be done without Remote Desktop

Connecting to NICE from outside

The NICE infrastructure (or other UNIX computers) can be accessed through either ssh or NX. The SSL gateway also offers a limited ssh access to NICE in its Basic mode. Please note that exporting data is possible by first connecting to NICE and then exporting data via ftp/scp.

Reading your email

Via Webmail (only a Web browser is necessary): see the guidelines.
Via Thunderbird (Installation rights needed on your computer: Windows, Mac and Linux).
Once installed and configured, Thunderbird uses the SSL gateway.

Accessing internal resources

Via the SSL gateway in Basic mode, it is possible to browse the Intranet including the Absence application (Pleiades), to access the eGroupWare Calendar, to share Windows files, and to use a Windows Remote desktop.

Making data available to outside collaborators

Connecting to the external ftp server
Windows
Linux and Mac
Note that data can also be deposited on our external ESRF ftp server by external collaborators, but therefore the ESRF correspondent has to grant a temporary access to the server.
He/she can contact the CS hotline to get this access for you.
