Setting up Thunderbird to read e-mail from outside ESRF
This is an example of a setup of an US-International version of Thunderbird
This guide will show you how to read ESRF mail from home
You Need:
- Use of Thunderbird (IMAP) at ESRF (If you use POP or Eudora, please use webmail)
- Internet connection
- A modern PC (Mac OS X, Windows or Linux)
You can download Thunderbird from http://www.mozilla.org for your language or
http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ to get an US International version as you have at work.
Downloading the ESRF version is not recommended since it is pre-configured to work inside ESRF. However, if you have an ESRF laptop, you can just add the SSL support to work at home:
http://intranet.esrf.fr/Computing/Assistance/Computers/InstallSoft/MozillaThunderbird/SSLConfig
We assume you have downloaded the US version of Thunderbird and you start it up:

- Select Email account
You will be presented with the next screen:
- You fill in your name and official email at ESRF
- Select Next

- Select IMAP
(very important, otherwise your mailbox will be emptied onto your home PC) - enter ssl.esrf.fr as Incoming and Outgoing server
- Select Next

- Enter your ESRF username (Site Username)
- Select Next

- To change the Account name is optional
- Select Next

- Select Finish
- Select Tools->Account Settings:
- Select Server Settings

- Select SSL in the Security Settings box
- You can profit from a clean Inbox and Trash if you check Clean up.. on Exit and Empty Trash on Exit
- Select Advanced...
-
- Nothing in [IMAP server directory]
- Uncheck [Show only subscribed folders]
- Uncheck [Server supports folders...]
- Set 1 to [Maximum number of server connections to cache]
- and [OK]
- Write Mail as IMAP server directory (in order to see all your folders) and
Unselect Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages
- OK it and select Outgoing Server
- Here the important part is to select SSL
- The Description is optional
You can now read Email from home and have perfect synchronization with your IMAP account at ESRF
