Connecting from Home to your PC (Windows XP or Vista)

Needed:

- A PC at ESRF configured for Remote Desktop

- The Name of your PC

- Internet connection

- A PC at home Running Windows XP or Windows Vista with Internet Explorer
(Note that Mac OS X, Windows Vista 64bit or Linux are not supported)

In case of difficulty, you are kindly invited to test the procedure hereafter from an ESRF PC outside the firewall.  PCs running Windows XP are available in Central Building room 088 and near the Auditorium, and the laptops from the Multimedia loan pool are running Windows Vista. This will enable you to validate the connection to your ESRF PC from outside.

Procedure:

SS1

  • Enter your username and password (same as for e-mail at ESRF) - The Site Username and Password
This will lead you to a screen asking you to install a software. There might be two software to install.

SS2

  • Select Install for all installations.
After installations, you will be greeted with the following screen:

SS3

  • Locate Windows Secure Application Manager and Click on Start
  • On a Vista you might have to Unblock connection
  • Make sure the logo of the Windows Secure Application Manager is present in the Taskbar:
(It looks like a snail with two antennas)

Now you have established a connection to ESRF. You need to use it.

  • Run the Remote Desktop client.
It is usually located in Programs/Accessories or Programs/Accessories/communication.
Alternatively you can click Start then select Run and type mstsc and press enter.
You should have a connection screen like the following:
SS4

  • Enter your computername
(Note that .esrf.fr is not needed, but please add it in case computername alone does not work):
SS5

It is important that you do not install printers by mistake on your work PC.

To avoid this, please select Options and you will have the screen below:

SS41

You select the Local resources tab:

SS42

Unselect Printers (as above) and re-click on Options <<

SS5

NOTE: Some old remote desktop client will ask you for credentials and will log you in directly.
This means that you connect as:

  XP at ESRF: ohlsson
  Vista at ESRF: ohlsson@esrf.fr

Then give your Password.

  • Click on Connect.
If you have Vista at home you will be presented with the next following screen:
SS6

  • Just select Yes.
You can select the check box: Don't show this warning again for connection to this remote computer
  • If you have XP at work: Your entire screen will be filled up with the next following screen:
SS7

  • You just enter your Username and Password as you would in front of your PC at ESRF
  • Note that you either have to log out or to click on the x in the topbar to stop your session
  • If you click on - in the topbar, it will iconize and you can see your home PC.
  • Note, that in case you loose the topbar, you might accidentally have put it in autohide. Just move the cursor to the top and it will re-appear.
