Data Collection and Transfer

The NICE ACCOUNT
The ESRF creates, for each scheduled experiment, a UNIX account on the NICE system - ESRF Networked Interactive Computing Environment - for the collection and transfer of the data generated on the beamline during the experimental session:
- the NICE ACCOUNT is opened 10 days before the starting date of the experiment,
- Each individual data file is kept for 30 days after its creation date,
- Both the account and the remaining data are removed by automatic procedures, without prior notice, 4 weeks after the end date of the experiment. Be warned!
Workstations are available in the Guesthouse (for e-mail only) and in the Central Building (ask your local contact).
The NICE ACCOUNT can be accessed by using a specific login and password linked to each scheduled experiment.
The login for the NICE account
The login corresponds to the experiment number:
- for the experiment IN-1000,
- the login is: in1000 (case-sensitive: small letters ONLY)
The password to access the NICE account
In order to preserve the confidentiality of the information registered in our database by the user(s), as from 26 August 2008, a specific INITIAL PASSWORD will be randomly generated by the system for each new scheduled experiment (ie. your experiment has never been scheduled and so a NICE account has never been created) and registered in the SMIS database:
- this password is displayed in the A Form of the session as "INITIAL PASSWORD" (in the "Session information" tab)
- this password is available to ALL USERS registered for an experimental session via an A Form, through the SMIS Web Client application :
Select:
* "Experiments"
* "A Form" (left-hand menu)
* "View A Form"
* see "Initial password" in the "Session information"
- this password is also available to the LOCAL CONTACT of the experimental session
- after its creation, this password may be modified by any of the users participating in the experimental session either:
* via the ESRF site password application (intranet): http://intranet.esrf.fr/Computing/GeneralAssistance/ChangePassword/
or
* once logged in to the NICE account, through the command "sitepasswd" (see below "How to access your NICE account from outside the ESRF")
IMPORTANT:
The password displayed in the A Form is the "INITIAL PASSWORD" generated by the system. If it is modified, the new password of the proposal will not be displayed via the A Form (a message will inform the users that a new password has been created). The new password will remain totally confidential. Therefore....
!! The user who modifies the password to access the NICE account of his/her experiment must inform the other members of the experimental team and the Local Contact about the new password !!
NICE ACCOUNT AND PASSWORD FOR EXPERIMENTS ALREADY SCHEDULED
If you have already have a NICE account, ie. your experiment number has already been used in the past, your old password will remain the same for the entire period of validity of the experiment number (the password is associated to the experiment number and its NICE account). However, you can modify it on NICE.
How to access your NICE Account from outside the ESRF
By using SSH, you will be able to access your NICE account from outside the ESRF (How to set-up SSH). This can also be used to change your password for your NICE account.
