High Brilliance

The exceptional high brilliance of the ESRF source is a result of the very low emittance of the electron beam and the high field quality of the undulators.

Photon Beam Imaging

The ID6 beamline is dedicated to the electron beam diagnostic. It is operated by the ID group. The X-ray beam produced by an undulator is permanently imaged and displayed in the control room of the ring. As a tutorial, we present a few movies showing the angular pattern of the central cone of the undulator radiation for several harmonics of the spectrum as a function of the magnetic gap.

Beam Sizes

The electron and photon beam sizes are well defined for all types of X-RAY source points (bending magnets, ID in high or low beta straight sections).

Simulations

The following images are the result of a numerical simulation made with SRW and present the effect of the electron beam emittance on the angular distribution of he radiation produced by an undulator.
