Technology

As all third generation synchrotron sources, the ESRF is making intensive use of insertion devices (IDs).

Almost all IDs are made of permanent magnets. The magnets are fixed on a rigid movable structure known as the undulator mobile carriage which has been standardised in order to accommodate almost any type of magnetic structures.

The majority of undulators are based on the pure permanent magnet configuration . The hybrid structure (permanent magnet & Iron-like pole) is mostly used for the high field wigglers.

Installation

The ESRF storage ring includes a large number of ID segments. The installation and maintenance of IDs has been optimized and takes place during short periods of shutdown.

New types of IDs

The design of new types of insertion devices is a central task of the ID group. A significant R&D program is being carried-out with the aim of improving the performances (brilliance, polarization ..) and flexibility.
