The ESRF X-Ray Source is operated,maintained and developed by the Machine Division. Under the leadership of the Machine Director, currently Dr. Pascal Elleaume, the Division is structured into seven groups, each with a particular responsibility.

The Operation Group handles all aspects pertaining to the organisation of the runs of the accelerators, as well as the periods when they are shut down for maintenance.

The Beam Dynamics & Applications Group is staffed by accelerator physicists, who work towards the optimisation of the source, and by programmers who develop software application programmes to control it.

Specific equipment is placed under the responsibility of each of the other five groups : Diagnostics, Front Ends, Insertion Devices, Power Supplies and Radio Frequency.

The Director's team also includes four colleagues who handle administrative matters such as finance and personnel, as well as web site management, desktop publishing and the organisation of shiftwork.
