About
80 experts attended this workshop, which brought together all accelerator
communities: Accelerator Driven Systems, X-ray sources, medical
and industrial accelerators, spallation sources projects (American
and European), nuclear physics, etc. With newly proposed accelerator
applications such as nuclear waste transmutation, replacement of
nuclear power plants and others, reliability has now become a number
one priority for accelerator designers. This aspect is now taken
into account in the design/budget phase, especially for projects
whose goal is to reach no more than ... 10 interruptions per year!.
The high quality presentations given in the workshop inspired some
very useful discussions. It soon became apparent that there is a
need for a better exchange of information about equipment reliability,
the technical problems encountered and the solutions adopted in
the different Institutes. Therefore, it was decided to start a WEB
site dedicated to accelerator reliability which will concentrate
on technical information around that topic. The workshop ended with
a visit of the various parts of ESRF equipment aimed at increasing
reliability at the ESRF: the power supply commutation grid, the
redundant RF system, the HQPS and ... the Control Room.
