CD-ROM

The CD-Rom "Exploring matter with synchrotron light"
Provides a comprehensive tool for high schools and universities.
By means of interactive links and animated sketches, the CD-Rom gives everyone the opportunity to undestand the subtle relationships between light and matter and to discover new breakthroughs in today's science.

The CD-Rom has been awarded the prize of the best scientific multimedia in 2001 by International Association for Media in Science (IAMS).

Events

Fête de la science
On the occasion of the French science week in October, the ESRF participates in the 3-day event in Grenoble called "Place aux Sciences". It is an opportunity for scientists to come out from their laboratories to meet the public and explain their research.
Open Days
The ESRF regularly organises "Open days". During 2 days, the facility opens its doors to the public in order to explain what is a synchrotron and to bring to light the research carried out at the ESRF. Information about these days is usually announced in the local press and by various media.

Visits of the Facility

It is possible to visit the ESRF for groups of students at University level.

Joint Educational Projects

EIROforum

ESRF is part of EIROforum, a partnership of Europe's seven largest intergovernmental research organisations. In EIROforum, these organisations pursue joint initiatives, combine resources, and share best practices.

The seven EIROforum members are:

  • CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research
  • EFDA - European Fusion Development Agreement
  • EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory
  • ESA - European Space Agency
  • ESO - European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere
  • ESRF - European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
  • ILL - Institut Laue Langevin

European Science Teaching Initiative (ESTI)

Coordinated by the EIROforum, ESTI combines three elements: Science on Stage (SOS), a new Journal of European Science Teaching (Science in School) and the Volvox project for biosciences. Formerly known as “Physics on Stage” (also sponsored by the Commission and the EIROforum), SOS is a cycle of science teaching festivals with dozens of national events across Europe culminating in an international festival every two years. Alongside seminars conducted by top scientists and numerous workshops, the festival includes a major teaching prize and a fair in which teachers demonstrate and exchange their best ideas. SOS will be held twice during the NUCLEUS project.

Science on Stage (SOS)

The Science on Stage programme offers European science teachers the chance to exchange successful and innovative teaching methods and materials. The programme is organised by EIROforum, a group of seven research organisations, with the goal to strengthen the awareness and interest of young people in science and technology. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of science lessons through the promotion of exciting ideas.

Science on Stage 2

The international Science on Stage 2 festival was organised from 1 to 6 April 2007 in Grenoble by the ESRF, ILL and EMBL Grenoble outstation. More details can be found at  http://www.ill.fr/scienceonstage2007/

Science in School

Science in School is a European journal to promote inspiring science teaching. It covers not only biology, physics and chemistry, but also maths and earth sciences, highlighting the best in teaching and cutting-edge research, and focusing on interdisciplinary work. The contents include teaching materials; recent discoveries in science; education projects; interviews with young scientists and inspiring teachers; education research; book reviews; European events for teachers; and an online discussion forum. Science in School is freely available. Online articles are published in many European languages; a print version is distributed in English. More details and the first issues are available at: www.scienceinschool.org.
