| Every year several thousand researchers come to Grenoble to take advantage of the exceptional properties of the synchrotron radiation generated at the ESRF and to conduct experiments using its highly specialised beamlines. Twice a year the ESRF solicits research proposals. Of the large number of proposals that are received, a high proportion come from European university laboratories or national research establishments. |
|
The projects are assessed by external committees, and in the end roughly half the applications are accepted. Each successful team is then allocated a certain amount of "beam time" -- 3 days on average -- on the beamline best suited to their experiment.
Travel, board and lodging for team members is organised by the ESRF to allow team members to concentrate entirely on science. During the experiments, ESRF scientists, engineers and technicians work to optimise the experimental conditions and data collection on each beamline. After the data is collected, researchers return to their own establishments to analyse this information. The results are published in due course in specialised scientific journals.
