Key dates of ESRF's construction

1975: meeting of a few scientists to consider the project of a European synchrotron capable of producing hard X-rays with a very great brilliance.

1984: decision to install the ESRF in Grenoble.

1988: the construction of the European synchrotron begins.

1992: first electron beam in the ring and first X-ray beam in a beamline.
Commissioning phase.

1994: the ESRF opens its doors to users, offering fifteen operational beamlines.

1998: forty beamlines are made available to researchers from all over the world.


European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
